This “Feeding on the Go” set is perfect when you are out and about! Set includes an adorable bib and a wet bag for storing feeding supplies.
The wet bag features 100% cotton fabric from David Walker’s robots and rockets line that has been quilted creating a unique patchwork look. It is lined with a water resistant fabric (PUL). Give us a little personal background info; childhood, hometown, etc.
My name is Katie Jean Walker and I was born and raised in Phoenix, Arizona. I now still live in Phoenix after a brief 3 year stint in Las Cruces, New Mexico where I met my hot husband! We now have a baby named Caden, he is now 16 months old and getting crazier every day.
Tell us about the history of your fashion design, especially how and when it started.
The history of my fashion design includes helping my mom make many of my Halloween costumes and some random clothes for me to wear to school on the days I woke up and had absolutely nothing to wear! My mom has taught me everything I know about sewing, I have always really enjoyed it, however I wasn’t very confident with my skills for a long time. About a year ago, we moved into a new condo and I met my neighbor Monique who also sews and has had a clothing line for a few years now. I was so inspired talking to her, I went home and made a little girls dress. I just kinda kept going and as Monique and I became better friends, we decided to make a kids clothing line together for local boutiques.
I also tried making some women’s clothes…to make a long story short, people liked them and so I kept making them. I started in bridal when I was given a vintage slip, curtains, and table clothes from my great-aunt. I created my first slipdress from those items. They took off and everything evolved from that! (but as far as a start date, I would say my first design was just in November 2007!)
What challenges do you find most in your designing?
The biggest challenge I find right now (beside having my sewing room in the kitchen because our condo is so small) is finding time to create new designs. I seem to have a lot of orders right now making the same things and although I love these designs, I have so many new ones that I can’t wait to make!
What materials and processes do you favor?
Some fabrics I like to use are lace, shantung silk, cotton, jersey knit… my favorite things about fabric are when they feel smooth, look old or have a unique quality to them.
Where do you find your inspiration?
I find my inspiration from all things old. I am kind of obsessed with antiques and I really love to think about the stories behind everything.
What goals do you envision for the next year, five years, ten years?
In one year I hope to have all my business stuff in order. In the next 5 years, I just hope to keep up with the orders like they have been coming in and hire my mom so she can quit her job. In 10 years I would like to be well known and be able to have an established business designing wedding dresses and other special occasion clothing. Somewhere in there I want to have 2 or 3 more kids too!
